Atonement Lutheran Church

One in Christ. Gifted by Grace. Called to serve.

Greetings from Pastor Jennifer Sweitzer

Welcome!  Thank you for visiting our website!

Atonement Lutheran Church is part of the New Jersey Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Founded in 1890, Atonement has been part of the rich history of Asbury Park, New Jersey for more than a century.

As Lutherans, we believe that we are “justified by grace through faith.”  That might sound like fancy religious lingo, but it’s just another way of saying we believe that God forgives and claims as God’s own all who believe Jesus is Lord.   Which is why our doors are open to all.  Everyone is welcome here!

Christian Education is available to children of all ages—from 3 to 103 years old!  Our Sunday Church School provides classes for pre-kindergarten through high school September through June and offers a week-long Vacation Bible School each summer.  Adult small groups meet every Sunday morning and for short-term studies on specific topics throughout the year—including our popular “Beach Chair Conversation” that gathers on the Asbury Park beach during the summer months (weather permitting).  Atonement’s two-year confirmation program is open to tweens and teens, 6th grade or older.

Atonement is committed to Asbury Park and the surrounding communities.  As one of the founding congregations of Interfaith Neighbors in 1988, we continue to support their expanding ministries through individual donations and the annual Atonement Lutheran Golf Classic.  More than twenty years ago, through the hard work and generous donations of our members, Luther Haven—a residential group living facility for individuals struggling with mental illness, now operated by Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey—became a reality.  And Atonement’s food pantry, open each Wednesday from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM, has been helping families throughout Monmouth County keep food on their tables for decades.

Music is very much a part of the Lutheran tradition and our very talented Director of Music, Michael Stauch, does an outstanding job of keeping music front and center in our congregational life.  In addition to Sunday worship and the choral offerings of the choir and soloists, Atonement also boasts The Arthur Reines Concert Series.  Named for a previous organist (who enjoyed more than a fifty-year tenure), the Reines Series presents choral and instrumental events throughout the year.  Atonement is also proud to host the Greater Shore Concert Band, as well as the Rosie’s Café Concerts.

Undoubtedly, there is far more about Atonement Lutheran Church than I could possibly share in the limited space of a single cyber-page.  I encourage you to visit us.  Come; join us for worship any Sunday morning at 10:00 AM.  Check this website often for news, updates, and upcoming events, and know that you are welcome here.  If you’re looking for a church home, or simply a place to worship at the shore, Atonement Lutheran Church invites you to join us for a day or a lifetime.

As this congregation’s pastor, I welcome your questions, doubts, concerns, and hesitations.  Please E-MAIL me; it would be both a privilege and a pleasure to hear from you, and I gladly welcome and promise to respond to all correspondence.

Still in awe of God’s grace in Christ,

Pastor Jenn
